Description

Brownfields are the result of industrial waste (nuclear, chemical, etc.) that has found its way into the ground and water at a site that usually is a factory, fuel depot, testing facility or other human made building or complex that houses these nasty chemicals.  Usually the grounds are useless after the company responsible moves out.  Unfortunately, many brownfields are located within poorer neighborhoods.  They are an eyesore and can be hazardous to people living there.

Many brownfields are on the Superfund list, where a designated amount of money is put aside each year to tackle so many sites.  The number of sites being cleaned has dropped considerably in the last five years due to the current administration.  During the 1990s, the companies who polluted were taxed to pay for Superfund site cleanups.  Now the burden has been shifted over to the taxpayers who really have no responsibility in creating these messes.

Water and soil can be removed from the site and processed to remove the toxins, and then the soil is brought back, or new soil is brought in to make to site useful again.  Another method, called bioremediation utilizes the spectacular abilities of bacteria that thrive on these chemicals to break them down to a non-toxic form!  Much research is being done in this area to make two centuries of brownfields useful once again.
