Description

These two issues are inextricably linked together, so we placed them on the same page.  There are still skeptics whether humans are affecting the temperature of the planet's biosphere, however many of them are employed by companies such as Exxon-Mobile who will ultimately face the realities of a limited global petroleum supply.  The global temperature has risen an average (spread out over the entire surface) one degree Celsius in the past century.  Predictions of 3 to 6 additional degrees Celsius are predicted for the next century.  We are also fast approaching the mid-point of the fossil fuel resource extraction (some say it has already passed us).  This mid-point, called Hubberts Peak after the man who predicted this two generations ago, should be a warning sign that we as a species should lay off the fossil fuels and follow a new directive of renewable resources for energy.  Because the extraction industry is subsidized by the government in the US, we do not see the actual cost of oil.  Combined with continued military support in regions such as in Southwest Asia, the cost is far higher.  The oceans rise about 2 millimeters a year.  This might not sound like much.  Combine this with crust subsidence and reduced material carried to the coast due to rivers being dammed and dredged, becomes a lethal recipe for coastal inhabitants, both human and non-human.  The earth's oceans and forests can only absorb so much carbon released into the atmosphere.  As rainforests (both tropical and boreal) are cut down, the carbon they hold are released.  Oceans are turning acidic as carbon is absorbed (the oceans have absorbed half of the carbon emitted over the past 200 years).  Many countries (including China) are moving away from the non-renewables because they see a day when recovering and burning fossil fuels will not be worth the effort.  Fossil fuels will become scarce quickly as India, China and the Russia all head towards a First World existence.  Second only to water, oil will be the most contested resource on earth for the next one hundred years.
